Texas Review Press has just brought out my first novel: Never Surrender—Never Retreat, A Novel of Medical Politics in Texas. Although fiction—all the characters and the plot are invented—the novel takes its impetus from an actual event, the acrimonious dissolution of a relationship between an academic hospital (The Methodist Hospital in Houston) and a school of medicine (Baylor College of Medicine) and the ensuing crisis. The novel asks about fiduciary responsibility in the not-for-profit world: how well-intentioned board members on both sides could have permitted something so detrimental to the public good to occur. Mostly, however, it's a good read—one of the main characters is a Jewish guy from Cleveland and ex-Israeli operative turned hospital administrator. Enough said.

KKW to all in celebration of the one-year-plus anniversary of the 2011 reunion. I continue to recycle stuff I learned at KK--swimming, tennis, digging holes, rough carpentry, etc. Have gotten VERY good at avoiding useful work (also a KK skill?) after almost 5 years of retirement. Hope everyone is well & stays that way.

Jim Samter was my first pick for in 1954 for the team I captained.[the Eagles] I remember him as the best athlete in our age group -- quiet, respectful but competitive. Some names I remember : Harvey Golubock Lenny Schloss Steve "Philadelphia" Friedman Steve "Haddon Heights" Friedman Stan Pittler Trenary Dolber. Breaking the ice at morning dip. Waking up in the middle of the night in a rainstorm and wondering what I was going to do with a full bladder.[finally pissed out the tent flap and nobody was the wiser.]

Lorna and I were invited to a benefit dinner in Laguna Beach last night. There were 220 of us in a local restaurant dining on steak and lobster, but the din around us and our guests was simply unbearable and we left as soon as we could. I was trying to remind myself of what that was like and finally I remembered: it was the Kamp Kewanee Mess Hall at lunchtime! Where was HC and his bell when we needed him!

Thanks to all for the links on Doc Klein. Certainly enjoyed talking to him at the reunion. Not being a Philadelphian, I didn't know about his investing in some of the Annenberg media empire. For what its worth there is a quote in the link below about Dick Clark where Doc was quoted about the integration of Bandstand and how it wasn't shown in the South.
