BS (again)
April 24, 2013 19:32:42 (EDT) |
In NYC this past weekend, Lee Kalcheim, Stuart Fuld and I shared an "entering our fourth quarter" brunch at the "French Roast" cafe, as we approached our 75th birthdays with appropriate vim and vigor (and with a couple of our wives). It was a wonderful mini-reunion!
What a great Manataka page! Thanks so much, Tom!
Thomas Schneider, thanks for putting up that page! There are plenty of pictures here of the "old" days, but it is great to see what the lake looks like now. For anyone who is Facebook challenged, here is the link: https://www.facebook.com/LakeManataka?ref=ts&fref=ts
Dear Kamp Kewanee Kampers,
My name is Tom Schneider I live in the care takers house at the entrance of the Kamp at Lake Manataka. I have set up a Facebook page " Lake Manataka " I post photos of the lake and grounds year round, and I invite you all to visit. It is very exciting this year because we have Bald Eagles who visit at the lake now, and I will have photos of them.
All the BEST,
Tom
It was wonderful to find this Knocker! I was looking up my distant Uncle Dave Sechrist just out of curiousity as his nephew Tom Owens died April 13. I grew up on the Stuble farm directly across the lake and I spent two wonderful summers washing dishes at KK. I still have my first SS card with Kamp Kewanee on it -- my first job. I remember "Taps" floating across the water every summer night at 9:00 PM. And seeing the Uncle Dave's nature hikes going past the farm while I was playing in the front yard. One of the perks of the job was borrowing a sailboat when it wasn't being used. Great memories of KK!
Within minutes of my earlier note Steve Klein had sent me links to seven fine photographs; thanks, Steve. Best regards.
Agreed with Cohen's Feb 10th note about the value of Dave S's essay. I haven't time to reread it now, but would like to again, suspect I will soon. I came to the site today hoping to easily find an interior photograph of Dave's 'nature lodge.' I believe I've downloaded such a thing but can't easily locate it yet. Any help?Thought of this after seeing Mourning Cloak butterflies while woods walking near Middlebury College, here in western Vermont, on Saturday, and relating to my companion how I'd learned soemthing about these--at Kewanee--about 1962.
BS, thanks for the reminder. Great memories.
I read Dave Sechrist's Memoirs of Kewanee today (you can find it under the Table of Kontents at the upper right of WFIL's Knocker). It is as wonderful as ever. I have promised myself to re-read it every five years - and I hope all of us do. Kee Kee Wah!

R.C.: I always thought that cow tipping was akin to snipe hunting.
Typo: Lake Manataka
I was back at Rocco's Tacos (Boca Raton, FL) this evening for dinner. The gal from Lake Manakaka waited on us again. This time I got her full name. It is Sara Tylutki. Her family still lives at the end of the lake. (The bull frogs continue to thrive in the lilly pads and are as loud as ever.)I mentioned how we used to dance through the cow pies across the lake (on hilly pasture) whilst chasing butterflies with our trusty nets and amonia kill jars. Sara asked if we had ever tried "cow tipping" on the hill. "Nay," responded I.
She said the local kids used to tip over cows by grabbing their legs and pushing. We pulled lots pranks, I explained, but "cow tipping" was not one of them. As a quid pro quo, I asked if she had ever edged a bed. "Nay," said Sara.
Onward!

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL!

I am not sure what is more amazing that you met someone from Fleetville, that the girl admitted, or that there were actually people who lived in Fleetville nevertheless on our lake. I would have thought that the message to this girl would have been to not visit this camp as the boys haven't seen a girl in weeks....What a great posting.

I'm very sad to report that Mike Corson's wife Ellen Moore passed away on Wednesday. Our thoughts are with Mike and his family. http://www.phillyburbs.com/obituaries/courier_times/ellen-moore/article_3e967a53-172b-5836-9201-55ae3e00fefe.html
LAST CALLLLLL FOR KAMP DVD'S
Hi All, had the good fortune to run into Bob Shoenberg last night at a holiday party--had fun remembering the KK days; Have great year to all. KeeKeeWa.Norm
Last night at Rocco’s Tacos (Boca Raton, FL) we had a server named Sara who hails from Fleetville, PA. Her family owns one of the few homes on Lake Manakata. As a young girl, Sara was told not to visit the Kamp area because the buildings were haunted. I, of course, confirmed that the spirits of old kampers reside there and watch over the property. Ha!
Sara has been at this eatery for three years and would love to hear from any kampers if they are in the restaurant.
Happy Chanukah!
